Prevent Injury With Personal Training

“But personal training is scary!”

Yeah, it certainly can be, at first. You may have not exercised in 30 years. You may have never stepped foot in a gym in your life. If you’re that type of person, it’s okay. You just need to pursue the proper personal training facility that isn’t there to intimidate you and make you as sore as possible. You need a personal trainer who can meet you where you are and progress you properly toward the results you’re looking for.

“But I’m afraid I’ll get hurt.”

The number one priority of all personal training plans is to keep you healthy and prevent injury. You can’t accomplish your health and fitness goals from the sidelines. If a program is designed to identify and address your aches and pains, it will go a long way towards keeping you injury free. Now, all injuries can’t be avoided in life, but addressing them can help lower that risk.

“But how can you help me not get hurt?”

I’m so glad you asked! Injuries often happen because of tightness or weakness. Often the tightness is caused by weakness. But most people don’t realize that. If you have a tight hip flexor causing back pain, for example, there is a good chance your opposing muscles, the glutes, are weak. If we strengthen them up, and work on your hip flexor flexibility, you lower the risk of injury to your back and hips. The same can go for your shoulders, knees, ankles, and so on. If we identify what is tight and we strengthen the muscle that opposes it, we can bring the chance of pain, discomfort, or injury down.

“But what do I have to do with a personal trainer? Will they push me too much? Will the weights be too heavy?”

It’s all about starting where you’re currently at. If your muscles are weak, no judgement, that’s okay. We have to find how strong they are, teach you how to do the movements properly, and progress you in a safe and effective way. If you can only do an exercise with your bodyweight, or you need to start with 5 or 10 pounds, a good personal trainer will identify that and start you there. Alternatively, if you are strong and can handle the movements, we’ll start you heavier. The trainer will ask you questions to make sure you’re feeling the right muscles during the movements. And they’ll make sure you can walk the next day!

“But I already stretch on my own and I think that sounds a lot less intimidating.”

Just holding a stretch will almost never make a significant difference for your joint or muscle discomfort. It also doesn’t tend to improve your muscle length and make you more flexible. But getting stronger with the right movements, through a full range of motion, will almost always make a difference.

The goals you have when you stretch are typically only actually solved through a combination of strength training, foam rolling, and mobility work. These three things should be targeted and planned out. It will make a massive difference in how your body feels and lower your risk of injury!
